I’m a 28 year old artist with a decade of painting under my belt, and other creative interests along the way. After graduating high school in 2007, I continued to pursue art on my own as I was navigating my way through hopes and heartaches. I wrestled with life through painting and it became the trustworthy friend to confide in. Over the years, I’ve learned that the more successful pieces of mine are the honest pieces. The ones painted by a broken man to a broken audience. No one can connect to a machine or an illusion of a person. Creativity takes courage, and I hope it can be said that I had courage here.

When I'm not painting, I work full time as a graphic designer and a live sound tech mixing 12 hours a week. I'm inspired by real life, the heights of joy, and depths of despair. And I try to escape to the mountains as often as I can...as fast as I can.

Greetings fam,

I wanted to update ya'll on one of the biggest life decisions I can make. I am legally changing my last name. I am nervous, insecure, but also confident that I must. Please check out my latest piece, "Sever Us" for an in depth explanation as well as my emotions on a canvas about this whole thing.

52 Hertz
52 Hertz
Oil painting
February 2014

Here is a story of loneliness to last for the ages. A story of hopelessness and hopefulness – told in song – from a solitary creature of the sea that has managed to reach a young man landlocked in the midwest. The 52 Hertz whale sings a song for no one, as the frequency that he sings is higher than that of his own kind, and they cannot hear it. This forces a loneliness upon him as vast as the ocean itself, and his cry for love and companionship echoes on through ocean walls with no response.

Since his initial discovery in 1989, a group of scientists have been tracking with him, peering into his life, and listening in. And he’s still singing. And he’s still on his own. Whether we’ve tapped into it or not, we all have a longing to be seen, to be heard, and to be known, and many of us have gone through our own lives feeling unheard. Whether it’s the cards we are dealt, or our own self preservation, loneliness threads across humanity composing one epic ballad. We all have our “own song”, that in the end, can only fully be heard by God. He lends the ear of heaven towards us, peering into our lives, listening in.

All the more, let us sing.

Very honored and privileged to have this featured in this amazing article, and to be asked for a brief quote on it.

Sever Us
I am about to do something that the majority of you won't understand. If you've been in my shoes, then you know the way your clothes don't fit the season. There's that shadow that is cast over the length of your lifetime. You can’t quite grow free from its shame.

When I look at my signature on my greatest works of art, my name reminds me of a story. It’s the story that dad wrote into my body with anger, hits, kicks, pepper & tape. Not much love. Not much care. As a boy, he even asked me to ask him if he did. He said no. As a man, my highest dreams and accomplishments are tainted by his name clinging onto mine. His fingerprints are left all over my life, though he’s been out of it for half of it. But the story gets better.

I’ve tended the wounds in my twenties. Wrestled with God till I was tired, giving into His affections. I have learned forgiveness. I have grieved the losses. I have peace, and a wealth of faith. My name is something I must be delivered from as much as the abuse and loss itself.

I've put over two years of thought into the idea of legally changing my last name. It's one of the more significant decisions I can make. I did not want to hasten it. As I’ve weighed the balance of the past against the future, one thing is clear. I am my own man. I choose a different legacy for my future wife and kids. I am not passing on the symbol of my greatest wound onto my greatest privilege.

With great joy on my 28th birthday, I am proud to re-introduce myself to the world,

Wesley Dale Ayers
